Edible Photos For Cakes – Design Your Own!

Have you heard about Edible Photos for Cakes?  Its such a fun and unique way of cake decoration.  The topper is made from a very thin layer of icing on a backing sheet sometimes called a “frosting sheet”.  Once removed from the backing you place the sheet on top of your cake which has already been iced with fondant or buttercream (by the way you can also use them on ice cream cakes!)  The frosting sheet will merge with the top layer of icing on your cake and is totally edible.

There are so many ideas for using edible image cake toppers.  Kids birthday cakes are a favourite and also wedding anniversary cakes look great with an old photo of the couple and a personal message.  The use is not limited to cakes, we also have cupcake toppers available.  You can also use them on iced biscuits :)

We are unique in giving you the ability to design the topper yourself using our special software online for free.  Just upload your image from your computer or import it by connecting to your Facebook or Instagram account.  Please watch our short video which shows how easy it is to design your own edible image cake topper WATCH NOW.

How to Apply Your Edible Photo Cake Topper

Helpful Hints on Working With Edible Image Frosting Sheets
Please store your icing sheet in the ziplock bag provided in a cool cupboard (Not Fridge)

VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ CAREFULLY– Do not attempt to peel the image away from the backing sheet with fingers, the image will tear.  Place the backing sheet on a table edge (with the image facing up) and roll the backing sheet over the sharp edge of the table (if you are unsure how to do this please search youtube.com for instructional videos on applying edible images).   This technique will help to pop the image off the backing sheet. If this doesn’t work, the humidity is too high.  If the image does not begin to pop away from the backing after running back and forth 2 or 3 times on the counter edge, try either the freezer or blow dryer method below to release the image.

Various icings can be used, however a very wet whipped cream or some non-dairy topping can cause the image to fade if left in the refrigerator. Buttercream icing, ganache and Pettinice (white plastic/fondant icing) works the best. Images can also be applied to white chocolate as a plaque. Lightly brush water onto the chocolate plaque before applying the image. If applying to dark chocolate, red, dark blue, purple, black icing, place a white coloured icing under the image as otherwise the colour will be able to be seen through the image.

A. Once the edible image has been on the cake for about 5 minutes it will begin to blend with the frosting. DO NOT TOUCH IT; it will leave a finger print just like frosting does when touched.

B. If your frosting has become dry, spray a fine mist (no puddles) of water on your frosting before applying the edible image.

C. We suggest using white frosting so your edible image will stand out better. Using chocolate can darken some images.

D. If the edible image creases or rips while placing, gently rub the area back together and it hardly shows.

E. If the edible image has become dry and brittle, place a damp (not dripping) paper towel folded into a square in the bag (against back side of the PLASTIC BACKING SHEET – not on imaged side) and let it sit for an hour. This will make the sheet moist. Before placing the image on your cake allow sheet to air dry for about 20 minutes. DO NOT let water or moisture get on the edible imaged sheet. Then follow the instructions above on removing the image.

F. When applying edible image to fondant, brush a small amount of water (no puddles) on the area prior to placing the edible image to ensure it adheres properly; the edible image will not blend into the fondant as with frostings; it is totally touchable.

MOST COMMON PROBLEM: Exposure to high humidity may cause Edible Image decorations to absorb moisture and stick to the backing sheet making them difficult to peel.  Working in an air conditioned environment can help.  If you experience difficulties due to high humidity, try the following:

BLOW DRYER METHOD: Using a blow dryer keep at least 12 inches away from the image and dry on low for just a few minutes then run the image across counter edge again to see if it releases.

FREEZER METHOD: Place the image in the freezer for around 2 minutes.  Immediately on removal from freezer run the image across counter edge again to see if  it releases.

These images are very fragile please read all instructions carefully before attempting to use.  Enjoy your Edible Image and please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
